Prodn. of gas mixts. part of which is purified and recycled and the remainder burnt to provide heat is described. The fresh gas is made by (A) partial oxidn. of fuels contg. carbon and hydrogen (e.g. naphtha, heavy or light oils, coals, brown coal or peat) with O2 and steam and/or CO2, (B) washing out carbon, CO2 and S cpds. from the gas, (C) mixing with recycled gas, and (D) reheating to 800-1000 degrees C by the heat of combustion of part of the used gas. A higher proportion of the combustion heat of the original fuel (i.e. 55-65%) is available for ore redn., giving substantial energy savings. Any fuel may be used, and the process is not limited by availability of methane or natural gas. |
