The process proposed according to the invention for making a rope made up of fashioned strands comprises, firstly, twisting of round threads 4 into strands 5 by winding the same to at least one layer on a core 1 having a soft material sheath 3, secondly, plastic compression of the strands, thirdly, forming of the strands into a fashioned profile D and, fourthly, twisting of the strands into a rope. The plastic compression is effected until each round thread 4 in the strand has acquired a wedge profile, the threads 4 bearing against the sheath 3 of the core have been partially squeezed into the sheath and the strand has acquired a substantially even exterior 6. In the use of round threads, the so-called structural density of the strands and the flexibility, strength and wear-resistance of the fashioned strand rope can thereby be increased.
