A mixture of material is fed to the column, which has a cooler at one end and a heater at the other, and in which a liquid and a crystallized phase are conducted in counter-flow. The column, is a container, divided transversely to the direction of flow of the phases into several mixing chambers by separation elements. A surface section of the latter has passage openings for the liquid phase which do not permit the passage of the crystallized phase. The separation elements are controllable openings for the phases passing periodically from one mixing chamber to the next. A pulsating device is connected to one of the two end regions of the column.
