The tub (1) is filled with soil and has several containers (2) buried below the surface. The container is impermeable to water and is enclosed, except for a vertical extension tube (4). This projects above the surface and is used to fill the container with water. The water level is gauged by a dipstick (5) and the plants are watered by wicks. These dip (7) in the water and pass through the container top (3). Each wick has a horizontal length (6), still buried in the soil, and dips downwards (8) to terminate in a frayed-out end (9).
