According to the method, the sliver (8) is compressed transversely while being introduced into a detection chamber (2) having entry (4) and exit (5) orifices of the same diameter, the said chamber (2) is fed with a compressed gas (at 3) at constant flow rate and pressure, and the variations in pressure produced in the said chamber (2) are measured (at 16, 17), a detection chamber (2) is used whose cross-section is equal to those of the entry (4) and exit (5) orifices, a sliver (8) is used whose fibres, taken in a given cross-section inside the said chamber (2), fill at least 5% of the cross-section of the said chamber (2), and at least one jet of gas which penetrates to the centre of the sliver (8) is injected into the said chamber (2), perpendicularly to the direction of advance of the said sliver (8), by a nozzle whose diameter is between 1/5 and 1/15 of the diameter of the chamber. <IMAGE>
