Arc welding torch - where torch handle carries welding electrode, and also contains potentiometer used for continuous manual adjustment of welding current

A welding electrode is located at one end of a handle which contains a potentiometer adjusted by a knob or button actuated by a worker. The potentiometer is connected to an electronic regulator which has two outlet leads. The two leads are connected in series with the prim. winding of a transformer fed by a mains electricity supply. The sec. winding of the transformer is connected to the welding electrode and to the workpiece being welded. The overall result is that a human worker holding the welding torch can adjust the potentiometer without changing his or her position. The sec. winding of the transformer can be connected to a rectifier when d.c. is being used for welding.
