The compact grinder sharpens a boring bit (11), using a combination slide (16,17,18) to machine the bit which is immobilised. The bed comprises an 'L' shaped block (6,12) on a base (4), the bar (6) providing a shelf for a rail (8) and lockable slides (9,10) which secure the bit. A stem (12) provides a laterally inclined rail (13) for the combination slide, the latter has three slides (16,17,18). The slides displace parallel to and normal to the longitudinal bit (11) axis respectively, the latter locating the grinding head (19). The assembly may be housed in a trapezoidal section superstructure (2) and may have a tray (5) for collecting lubricant.
