A thin film thermally activated galvanic cell has a single negative electrode sandwiched between two positive electrodes with a total thickness about 1.6 to 2mm, not greater than 2.5mm. The positive electrodes are nickel gauze impregnated with and coated with a mixture of 32-46% Ca chromate, 54-68% LiCl/KCl (containing 30-50% LiCl pref. the LiCl/KCl eutectic). The electrolyte consists of LiCl/KCl eutectic and the negative electrode Ni gauze or perforated plate coated with Ca. Batteries are assembled in refractory containers of low thermal conductivity and activated by pyrotechnic heaters. The cells are used for fuses and priming devices generally and have high power/weight ratio, short activation time and good mechanical strength.
|
