Methanol is added to neutralisation soln. at any desired stage before (NH4)2SO4 separation in process for acrylamide separation in which an acrylamide sulphate soln. is neutralised with NH3 in an aqs. medium, and (NH4)2SO4 crystals are separated from the neutralisation soln. when this soln. is appreciably saturated with acrylamide, followed by crystallisation of acrylamide from resulting mother liquor (by concentration and/or cooling). Pref. 5-45 (more pref. 10-30) wt. % methanol (per total methanol and water) are added to neutralisation soln. at pref. 0-50 degrees C (more pref. 10-30 degrees C). Process allows economical prodn. of pure acryl amide from acrylonitrile, by hydrolysis with H2SO4 by-product is suitable for use as fertilizer, and its acrylamide or polymer content does not damage plants.
|
