A 50-65% aq. soln. of a soluble cyanide esp. NaCN and a 6 C aldose or ketose esp. dextrose or fructose is left to stand at 0-40 degrees C pref. 0-10 degrees C for 4-12 hrs. and NH3 removed as it is formed. alpha-Glucoheptanate dihydrate is obtained as light coloured crystals. Used as sequestering or chelating agent for metal ions esp. in alkaline solution e.g. in bottle washing, paper production, textiles, cotton, rust removal and descaling. Advantages of this procedure are light coloured crystals, high yield and easy isolation of the alpha-isomer, relatively short reaction time and low cost.
|
