Sterilizing apparatus comprises an evacuable chamber 1 closed by a door 4 and communicating via a passage 6 with an enclosure 7 having a lid 9 and containing a cartridge of sterilizing gas 8 which may be opened by screwing down the enclosure lid 9 so that the end of the cartridge is pierced by the spike 19. The apparatus is characterized by a safety arrangement whereby, after the door has been closed and secured by the threaded shaft 22, an actuating device in the form of an eccentric member 12 rotatably mounted on a shaft 13 is withdrawn from its housing to a position (shown by broken lines in Fig. 3) in which rotation of the eccentric member operates the gas release mechanism and also secures the door fastening mechanism (see Figs. 2 and 5, not shown). Rotation of shaft 13 is effected by a drive shaft 25 (operating in a key way therein) which is operated by a drive 23 actuated by a control device 24 which can only operate when both of switches 27 and 28 have been closed. Of these, switch 27 is closed only when the door fastening mechanism 22 has been closed (see Fig. 5 not shown) and switch 28 is closed only when the eccentric 12 has reached its operating position. As shown, the automatic control device extends to operating the remainder of the process in accordance with a predetermined programme there being an over-riding manual control system with an emergency disconnecting device which enables any part of the programme to be selected or discontinued. |
