The modification to a programmable printing machine comprises the inclusion of a vertical stroke of 'baton' in the type set. This is required in order to be able to print bar codes of various kinds. The width of the hammer used to print the vertical line may either be an exact multiple of the min. step size, or may be the min. step size of the machine itself. Typically the machine may be able to produce lines of 0.21 mm width or multiples of this. By modification of existing machines the use of costly special machines is avoided.
