The steam iron has a sole plate with a water vessel and a steam chamber, a water inlet from the vessel to the chamber being inserted through the former and rotating in a valve body below it so as to free or cut off the flow. The inlet has a nozzle at the lower end containing a needle, which can be moved axially by a hand control at the top end of the inlet. Its central portion is hollow and has a relatively large side opening, which is brought when it is turned into line with a mating recess in the valve body so as to form a connection to the interior of the water vessel. The inlet, together with its handle, nozzle, needle and hand control, forms a sub-assembly easily removable from the iron.
