The arrangement is intended for a qrinding machine having a grinding disc which is partly enclosed by a guard cowl (3) secured to a housing (1) by, preferably releasable, fasteners (5,6). At least part of each fastener is arranged so as to permit plastic deformation to absorb kinetic energy in the event of fracture of the disc. An open space (8,10) is left between the fastener access point in the housing (1) and the guard fixing area to permit the fastener to bend under violent impact on the guard. This space may be provided by a recess (8,10) in the housing or by interposing a wide-bore spacer ring.
