The X-ray examination apparatus comprises a tube mounted in the examination table and a camera carriage travelling with the tube along the table. An aiming mechanism carriage slides on this carriage at right angles to the table surface, the aiming mechanism tilting on an axis parallel to the lengthwise axis of the table, while a single counterweight is provided for the tilting and aiming carriage sliding movements. The counterweight (10) acts on a rope (15) reeved round a pulley (16) in a fixed mounting on the camera carriage (4) above the aiming carriage (6), and round one or more further pulleys (17,18) below the level of the aiming mechanism (7) on the aiming carriage to a fixed point (22) on the aiming mechanism.
