The invention relates to beds for patients, operating tables, reclining chairs or similar articles of an adjustable type and with a frame for receiving, for example, the base of the bed, the working surface, the seat part or the like, which frame is held by supports. According to the invention, each support 1 comprises an upper cylinder 4 which receives an upper piston 10 movable in the vertical direction and provided with a part movable outside the upper end of the support and intended to support the frame. The upper piston 10 rests against a flexible upper cushion 15 located inside the cylinder 4. By applying hydraulic or pneumatic pressure to the upper cushion 15, the latter expands and thereby displaces the upper piston 10.
