Prim. and sec. straight and branched chain aliphatic amines are made by reducing catalytic ammonolysis of 3-6C alcohols and ketones in a continuous process in which a 8-15:1:20-40 mixt. of ammonia, the oxygen cpd. and hydrogen is reacted in the gas phase at 100-250 deg. C and a press. of 5-25 kp/cm2. The catalyst used is comprised of a 0.5-2:10 mixt. of Ni and Co together with oxides of gp. III and IV elements, with a content of 25-35% Ni + Co. The volume rate of the reactants for prodn. of a prim. amine is 1000-15000 h power-1 and 3000-6000 h power-1 for sec. amines. Process is economical to carry out, uses relatively cheap catalyst, and is suitable for industrial scale prodn.
