A composition for judging the state and probable future progress of caries on the basis of a color reaction consists of an aqueous solution containing sucrose, amino acid mixture, sodium azide and thioglycolic acid, together with an adequate amount of a coloring reagent. A swab carrying dental plaque of a carious patient is placed in the aqueous solution, the mixture is incubated and the caries activity is judged based on the color reaction. With the composition of the invention, cariogenic bacteria grow selectively in the incubation step giving a sharp and distinct color reaction in the mixture. |
