The vehicle mounted road gritting attachment has a hopper (1) for the grit and a compressed air supply (32) to eject a metered rate of grit into the distribution ducts (10) leading to the wheels. The air is heated by passing through a heat exchanger (27) about the exhaust pipe. The system has a simple compressor as the only moving part, with the rest of the metering controlled by flow restrictions and the motor speed. The heating effect is regulated by temperature sensors (17) in the hopper and by a selective path through the heat exchanger.
