A platen 10 for use in heating the end of a first thermoplastic pipe 26 and simultaneously heating a portion of the sidewall of a second thermoplastic pipe 24 so that the two pipes together can be joined in perpendicular relationship, the platen having portion 36 with a convex surface 38 for heating the first pipe 26 and portion 28 with a concave surface 30 for heating the second pipe 24, the platen heating surfaces having grooves 40 therein, the grooves 40 serving to increase the area of contact between the platen and the plastic pipes to thereby increase the melt depth, promote the mixing of the two surfaces when they are pressed together, provide escape channels for entrapped air and thereby effect a better heat fusion of the pipes. <IMAGE> |
