A method of manufacturing plates for electric storage batteries includes the steps of expanding a strip of lead or lead alloy leaving a central unexpanded land, repeatedly engaging the unexpanded land with movable gripping means 36 and 37 a predetermined distance so as to advance the strip through a lozenge punch, removing one or more lozenges of metal from the land by means of the lozenge punch leaving holes 20 and 22 and gripping the central land fixed gripping means 30 and 31 to maintain the strip stationary at those times when the movable gripping means is not moving.
