The invention relates to a process for the preparation of an improved phenol foam with a more homogeneous cell structure, improved mechanical and thermal properties and a better foam structure. It is prepared by foaming a phenol-aldehyde oligomer condensate such as resol, an extended resol or a mixture of resol and novolak resin in the presence of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.
