PURPOSE:To increase coercive force and mechanical strength enabling high density recording and improving durability by forming a metallic magnetic layer on a nonmagnetic base material and then heat-treating in a nonreducing atomosphere at a particular temperature. CONSTITUTION:After forming a metallic magnetic material layer on a nonmagnetic base material 6 by deposition, etc., it is heat-treated in a nonreducing atmosphere at 200-450 deg.C. For the nonmagnetic base material 6, for example, a plastic film of polyimide, polyamidimide, etc., is used. By so doing, the surfaces of the deposited magnetic grains are oxidized by the heat treatment at a temperature not higher than 450 deg.C which does not influence the base material 6, the grains are separated and coercive force is improved, and also the mechanical strength of the magnetic material layer is increased. Therefore, the short wave characteristics are improved enabling high density recording, the angle of incidence of oblique deposition is reduced increasing the efficiency of deposition, and the durability of the magnetic recording medium can also be improved. |
