In the method for controlling a multi-digit liquid-crystal display for the purpose of representing information in accordance with the multistep matrix multiplex principle, pulse storage is instigated in order to avoid time errors and to lengthen the service life of the liquid-crystal display. For this purpose, the pulses corresponding to the base pulses (SA to SH) that are to be fed to the segment electrodes of all display positions in a respectively current time-clock interval (t0 to t7) are stored serially during the respectively preceding time-pulse interval (t0 to t7), and signals corresponding to said stored pulses are used with the start of the respectively current time-pulse interval (t0 to t7) to drive the segment electrodes of all the display positions in parallel by means of an edge-triggered memory (STS) whose storage time corresponds to the time-pulse interval (T/8). The circuit arrangement for carrying out the method is intended to ensure that the signals which are to be fed in total to the individual positions of the liquid-crystal display are temporally independent of the signals causing them and determined by the information to be represented. In order for time errors which occur during driving of the control circuits by means of the information signals not to be transferred to the signals which are fed to the individual positions of the liquid-crystal display, the circuit arrangement for serial storage (SR) has shift registers which respectively correspond to the number of segment electrodes per display position, and the inputs are connected in parallel with a signal storage device (ROM). <IMAGE>
