In a process for hydrolytic degradation of starch in agricultural prods. by pressure steaming individual charges of heated process water and the prods., the mash is heated to the desired temp. and maintained at this for a period which depends on the temp. achieved, to promote the hydrolysis reaction. Before releasing the material to atmospheric press., it is subjected to a cooling phase, during which the hydrolysis is continued. The heat extracted by the cooling is used to heat the process water for the next charge of mash. The process is useful for conversion of starch in cereals, potatoes, root crops, etc., into dextrins, e.g. for subsequent conversion into alcohol. The present process reduces the hydrolysis time and reduces energy consumption by utilizing the heat from one batch to heat process water for the next.
|
