Di:hydro-di:cyclopentenyl (meth)acrylate - from dicyclopentadiene and acrylic or methacrylic acid, with tungsten hetero-poly acid catalyst

A dihydrodicyclopentenyl ester is prepd. by reacting dicyclopentadiene with (meth)acrylic acid, in presence of a hetero-poly acid of W or an acid salt of this acid, as catalyst, and opt. in an organic solvent. Claimed catalysts are tungstosilicic, tungstophosphoric, tungstoboric and/or tungstoaluminium acids. The amt. of catalyst is not less than 0.1 (1-5) wt.%. Reaction is at 40-100 (50-80) deg.C. The molar ratio of dicyclopentadiene:acid is 0.5-2:1 (0.8-1.2:1). Reaction is pref. in a solvent when methacrylic acid is used. Solvents include ketones, esters, ethers, acetonitrile, and/or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate. The catalyst is heat-stable; the prod. can therefore by isolated by distn., without first neutralising and washing the reaction mixt.
