<p>The front end portion of a conveyor (22) is detachably connected to the floor of a self-propelled tunneling shield (20), by an elongate link (38) for towing the conveyor (22) with the shield (20). Additionally sockets (100) are fixedly attached to shield (20) and engage with the forward end portion of the conveyor (22) to vertically support and laterally constrain the conveyor (22) while permitting the conveyor (22) to slide longitudinally, rock about a horizontal axis and pivot a limited degree about a vertical axis relative to the tunneling shield (20). The rear end of the conveyor (22) is supported inclined upwardly by a trailing, mobile power unit (24). A carriage (28), riding on support rails (26) mounted along the length of conveyor (22), supports an excavating elongate boom (30) for movement with carriage (28) toward and away from the tunnel face. </p> |
