<p>An expanding reel for automatic winding of balls of yarn has a spindle sleeve with a serrated end and inwardly-projecting pins which hold the yarn end during doffing. The serrations comprise an odd number of teeth, whereby each is diametrically opposite an inter-tooth gap. The pins extend radially from the tips of the teeth almost to the centre of the sleeve. The reel is opened and closed by longitudinal movement of an axial rod to which the inner reel arms are affixed. The middle reel arms have a cranked end to avoid trapping yarn when the reel is folded. The reel is simple and inexpensive to construct, and ensures tucking-in of the yarn end to the centre of the ball during doffing without the use of additional complicated mechanisms, and without any projecting parts to hinder the doffing process.</p> |
