Four stroke reciprocating IC engine - has auxiliary camshaft and valve to give firing on alternate strokes only

The engine has a fuel injector (3) and an inlet valve (2) operated by a rocker arm from a cam on a shaft (11). An axuliary valve (4) on the inlet and a valve (8) on the fuel injector are operated by pushrods (4,7) from a rocker arm (13) which is moved by a cam (6) on an auxiliary camshaft (5). This revolves at half engine speed so that the inlet is closed and the fuel supply interrupted every working stroke. When full load operation is required a control cam (12) lifts the rocker arm (13) off the auxiliary cam (6) and normal operation on every working stroke can then take place.
