The cylinder head contains at least two valves and a hole for an injector or sparking plug. In the curved base of the head is a ceramic insert (7), which pref. also forms the valve seats. The insert may be located only in the zone (5) between the two valves seats, or may also surround the hole (8). These zones are pref. coated with a wear-resisting oxide layer preventing cracks from occuring in the curved base of the head. The curved base forms the top of the enginecylinder. The oxide layer is pref. alumina obtained by anodic oxidation.
