The apparatus for polishing a workpiece (7) has an open-topped cylindrical work holder (4) rotated about a vertical axis by a drive motor (20) below. Supported on a surface (1) around the work holder is a block (8) with an extension (9), which closes the open top of the holder, forming a chamber which is filled with a polishing medium. The block is hollow, and is divided into two chambers (11,12) by a vertical partition (10). Inside each chamber is a piston (14,15) so connected to respective drive motors (16,17) that they are reciprocated alternately. Below the partition is an extension (13), past which the polishing medium is driven in opposite directions over the workpiece below.
