The cam having a plurality of knitting systems (I-IV) is divided into a plurality of cam regions (A, B, C) located next to one another transversely to the carriage running direction. In addition to a selecting cam region (C), a division into a tucking/knitting cam region (A) and a middle transfer/take-over cam region (B) is provided. The division into the cam regions (A) and (B) ensures that each system can be constructed from the same cam parts, and therefore, theoretically, each of the systems (I-IV) can be used selectively as a knitting system or as a transfer or take-over system. Moreover, the cam-region division carried out allows a compact and therefore low-mass construction of the machine carriage. <IMAGE>
