The underwater mine comprises a housing containing a firing charge and a fuse. After laying it takes up a position on the bed of sea, a river, etc. It incorporates a gas-pressure operated buoyancy system (1), actuated after a predetermined period, whereupon it floats up from the waiting position on the sea bed etc. to an operating one on the surface, or at a predetermined depth below it. For this operation a gas generator (10), using a pyrotechnic charge, propellant charge etc. acting on a telescopic portion of the housing, is used so as to increase the displacement volume of the mine.
