The socket (1), of tough elastic material is insertable from below in a blind hole (50) in a step (32), for fixture on a staircase. It contains a vertical channel (5) with wider top section, and with a stop ledge (7) between top and bottom sections. A lug (14) is attachable to an underlay, with a screw, so as to be adjustable for height. It has a head (20), and a stop ledge (22) fitting the socket channel, above its neck (18). A step, fitted with one or more such sockets, is pressed over lug heads so that the bottom parts of sockets expand in width, and then are locked in so as to hold the lug heads firmly. The socket may have an additional parallel channel for a fixing screw (52). This is versatile, permitting direct step fixture on a stringer or support bar, as well as to concrete blocks or masonry.
