<p>Pure anthracene, useful for anthraquinone dye production, is obtained in high yields by (i) cooling coal tar anthracene oil of 300 - 420 degrees C b.pt. range to 15 - 30 degrees C whereby anthracene separates quantitatively as anthracene residues, (ii) separating these anthracene residues from easily soluble constituents, particularly phenanthrene, by cold extraction with and/or re-crystallisation from an arylalkyl ketone, and (iii) separating carbazole by distillation. Pref. ion (i) 1 pbw anthracene oil is mixed with 0.2 - 0.4 parts filtered anthracene oil, mixture is cooled to 15 - 30 degrees C and the anthracene residues are separated by centrifuging and pref. in (ii) anthracene residues : acetophenone (arylalkyl ketone used) is 1 : 0.2 - 0.4.</p> |
