Panchromatically sensitised polyarylene-vinylene photoconductive layer - contg. cpds. with coloured cation and a hydroxy arene anion, e.g. malachite green picrate

Panchromatically sensitised photoconductive layer for electrophotographic recording, comprises (a) at least one poly(arylenevinylene) as polymeric photoconductor; (b) opt. an additive chosen from distyrylarenes, diaryl cpds. aromatic nitro cpds., aromatic carbonyl cpds. or aromatic amines; (c) opt. an electrically insulating binder and a plasticiser; and (d) a sensitiser comprising a coloured salt of a coloured organic cation such as cations of crystal violet, malachite green, fuschin, methylene blue, etc., and anions of hydroxyarenes, pref. picrate ion. Specific sensitisers are malachite green picrate (C23H25N2)+ (C6H2N307)- (I), fuschin picrate (C2OH2ON3)+(C6H2N307)- (II) and crystal violet picrate (C25H3ON3)+(C6H2N307)- (III). The sensitisers give high sensitivity, panchromatically sensitised electrophotographic materials.
