1336185 Railway brake-operating mechanism CARDWELL WESTINGHOUSE CO 24 May 1971 [6 July 1970] 16680/71 Heading F2E A chain 49 attached to a railway-wagon brake (not illustrated) is wound up on a drum 30 by a hand-wheel 68 through gearing 62, 276 and 278 and teeth 220 on the drum; the direction of rotation of hand wheel and drum being clockwise. The second link 243 of the chain is accommodated in a recess 237 of the drum hub and thereafter successive links are accommodated alternately in recess 232 and on surfaces 236, 238 of the drum hub until the drum has been rotated through one revolution plus 30 degrees: after which no more chain can be wound on. When the brake is released, a stop arm 248 loosely mounted by its collar 246 on the drum hub is not affected by drum rotation until a lug portion 250 on the drum hub makes contact with it, whereupon it is moved into contact with surface 260 of a stop block 254 fixed to the back plate 18. Further "unwinding" movement of the hub is thereby prevented. The embodiment of Fig. 3 (not reproduced) may be used with the brake operating mechanism of Specification 1,176,761. |
