Stabilisation of glycol ethers yielding alkali metal hydroxide when obtained by reacting a 1 ,2-alkylene oxide with an alcohol is effected by adding from 0.01 to 10 ppm of a basic compound selected from alkali metal hydroxides, alkali metal carbonates, alkali metal slats of organic acids and alkali metal compounds which are capable of mixed with the reaction products to the reaction products. The basic ompound is preferably an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate.
