<p>Water-insoluble compsns. which are capable of absorbing at least 45% by wt. of water at ambient temp. to form an optically clear hydrogel are made from an optically clear mixt. of (a) 40-98% by wt. of a water-soluble polymer of a vinyl lactam (I) (where X is 3-5C alkylene) or a water soluble copolymer of this with 1-90% of an ethylenically unsatd. monomer (II) of mol. wt. at least 10 000, and (b) 2-60 wt.% of a water insoluble copolymer which is obtd. from 50-90% of of water insoluble hydrophobic ethylenically unsatd. monomer (III), 2-12% of an acid gp. contg. ethylenically unsatd. monomer (IV) and 15-45% of an acid gp. free hydrophilic ethenylenically unsatd. monomer (V). Dressings for wound and burns, coatings for catheters and surgical sutures, soft contact lenses, for admin. of controlled doses of medicaments, Non-medical uses include internal to prevent condensn. of water vapour.</p> |
