PURPOSE:To purify and separate a human growth hormone for clinical use in high purity simply from a mixture containing a hypophysical hormone and impurities, by the chromatography of the mixture with a water- insoluble carrier having a hydrophobic group. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of an inorganic salt, e.g. sodium hydrogenphosphate, as the inorganic salt, containing a human growth hormone, which is partly purified by the well-known method, e.g. precipitation or gel filtration, is purified by the hydrophobic chromatography with a water- insuluble carrier having a hydrophobic group, e.g. trade name of the product: Phenyl-Sepharose R CL-4B (manufactured by Pharmacia). The adsorbed substance is then eluted with an aqueous solution whose total concentration of the inorganic salt is suitably reduced stepwise to the range of 0.5-0mol in a volume of 1-3 beds for each step to give the titled substance selectively. The aqueous solution of the inorganic salt is used as a pH of preferably 6-8.
