The safety catch prevents the release of a load held by a drum hoist. A radial pin (9) is fixed to a sleeve (14) at one end of the drum shaft (1). A collar (8) is free to slide along the radial pin (a) by gravity, and the overall length varies from shortest at the top to longest at the bottom, during normal drum rotation. In case of failure, the load falls at sufficient speed to throw the collar (8) out by centrifugal force. The collar (8) engages a bracket (16) fixed to a stationary mass to halt the descent.
