<p>The machine has a field coil which is displaceable parallel to the rotor and in a radial direction hence acting as a speed control. The coil may be a polyphase fed constant frequency linear motor type providing a non-linear speed variation. For linear variation, a succession of permanent magnets or electromagnets with alternating polarity may be used. The rotor is a plane rectangular section disc moving on a shaft common to the field coils. A set of four coils is positioned on both sides of the rotor and each is held by four fixed rods. The coils are located in spiral slots in a pair of discs which, when rotated, force the coils inward and outward along the rods.</p> |
