Motor vehicle radiator liq. level detector - uses float operated magnetic switch in subsidiary expansion chamber and connected to lamp circuit

Liquid such as oil in a motor vehicle engine is required to remain below a particular temp. to prevent excessive wear. A detector generates a warning if the water level in the radiator falls below a lower limit valve and thereby allowing oil temp. to rise. The detector comprises a subsidiary chamber (41) attached to an expansion chamber (26) for the water coolant radiator and separated from it by a plate (56). Cut away sections (63, 64) permit communication of the water in the two chambers. A plastic float (68) in the subsidiary chamber has a ferrite block (76) mounted in a cavity formed in the base. This reacts with a switch (84) which is sensitive to the magnetic field from the ferrite block. The switch is in a lamp circuit on the vehicle dashboard and is operated when the water level falls.
