Naphthalene diol-2,3 derivs. of formula (I) are new, where the gp. of formula (I) a is a gp. (II)G is H, a sulphonic gp. an ammonium or amine sulphonate gp. (G1) has the formula (SO3-,EH+) E is NH3 or prim, sec. or tert. aromatic or aliphatic amine, Z is -P(O)(Y1)(OT), where Y1 is OR, R is alkyl or not more than 8C or ammonium, the gp. OR being then of formula (O-,EH+), T being then equally a gp. R1 X1 being of formula (III) p being 0-3, G as above and being identical of these are several G's . The gps. OR are identical if one is oxyammonium T is OR', R' being alkyl or not more than 8C. Y1 and X1 being than a divalent gp. of formula (IV) p is 0-3 and q is 0 or 1. When q is 1 the P atoms are linked by O; when p and q are both o, X1 and Y1 comprise a valence bond, G is as above. The cpds. are used for recording or copying processes. They react with chromogenic cpds. to form colours.
