A line central office (SZ) can communicate cyclically with the car devices (FG1, FG2, FG3) of equipped cars (F1, F2, F3). If a plurality of cars (F1, F2, F3) form a train, the car device (FG1) of a master car (F1) takes over communication. The car devices (FG2, FG3) of the slave cars (F2, F3) are informed by the car device (FG1) of the master car (F1), via at least one remote control channel, as to which of the cyclically output information from the line central office (SZ) is intended for the train in each case. If the car device (FG1) of the master car (F1) is defective, the car devices (FG2, FG3) of the slave cars (F2, F3) are instructed via at least one remote control channel to take over the mastership in a preset sequence.
