To print each of a number of sheets, each sheet is advanced in turn up to a front-registering station and registered for front lay. The sheet is also registered for side lay. A registered sheet is held by suction on an underlying conveyor portion (14) at the registering station and advanced in a series of steps to a printing station (20). The registered sheets is then printed while it is substantially stationary following a step of advancement and while it is still held in register on the conveyor.
