Liq. fuels for IC engines are produced by diluting a heavy hydrocarbon fuel in situ (i.e. in the fuel tank) with at least 2% of a mixt. comprising 1 pt. wt. of an additive (I) and at least 15 pts. wt. of a regenerated heavy oil (II), where (I) comprises cationic fatty amines and an organometallic catalyst. For diesel fuels, (II) is pref. purified and re-fined sump oil and the mixt. of (I) and (II) is added in an amt. of 2 vol.%, esp. by adding 1 litre of (I) and 19 litres of (II) to 1000 litres of gas oil. The heavy fuel oils (II) is pref. a bunker oil or petroleum refining residue and the mixt. of (I) and (II) is added in an amt. of 5-10 vol.%, esp. in a (I):(II) vol. ratio of 1:19. The organometallic catalyst is pref. a Ce-based material (e.g. "Aviorex"). (II) serves as an inexpensive diluent which, when added together with (I), improves the detergency properties of the fuels without impairing their combustion characteristics.
|
