The variable reactance comprises a primary coil surrounded by a closed magnetic circuit and a rod of iron leaves forming a magnetic core. The rod has a number of circular grooves formed in its surface, in which a number of short-circuited secondary coils are wound. The coils have a small number of turns. Axial displacement of the core, from within the primary to a position where the secondary coils are all outside the primary, increases the primary reactance from a minimum to a maximum. A modified reactance has a semi-circular toroid primary with a central axial opening through which an annular core wound with secondary coils can be moved.
