The tobacco passes from a supply container along an inclined vibrating channel (5). The coarser tobacco particles pass via a grille (50) directly into a feed channel (10) and fill a metering or dosage chamber. The contents of this chamber are passed to the pan of a weighting device. Adjustable metering flaps (54) distribute the fine component of the tobacco over the central region (52) and side regions of a base (53) beneath the grille (50). Financial loss is reduced by approaching the wanted weight of the portion from below - adding fine tobacco particles gradually - instead of allowing the portion's weight to overshoot the wanted value. Repeated overweighing, from e.g. tobacco clumps is avoided.
