Solid or liq. foods contg. monoglycerides (A) for nutritional purposes are new. Pref. apart from (A), they contain no free fatty acids, di- or tri-glycerides of long-chain fatty acids, but triglycerides of medium-chain acids, phospholipids and dicarboxylic acid esters of monoglycerides can be present. Pref. (A) has a high content of essential fatty acids and makes up 5-95% of total fat content. Pref., on an energy-content basis, the compsn. comprises 5-60% fat; 2-40% protein (hydrolysate), polypeptides or amino acids, and 30-80% carbohydrates, plus salts, trace elements, vitamins, crude fibre, and aromatising agents. Compsns. are used esp. to treat essential fatty acid deficiency or disorders of fat digestion (esp. when caused by lack of enzymes or bile acids). (A) can be digested without requiring lipases or bile acids; are self-emulsifying; are directly resorbed by the mucosal cells of the jejunum, and also cause a redn. in blood triglyceride levels (i.e. alleviation of type I hyperlipoproteinaemia and A-beta-lipoproteinaemia). |
